Executive Director Shawna Gardham and Board member Robert Belcham traveled to Kelowna in March for a couple of important reasons. It was the Western Canadian Culinary Federation Conference, and they wanted to show support for this great organization and to spread the word about the Restaurant Culture Shift grant program and COOKSCAMP 2025.

It also gave an opportunity for Robert Belcham to help judge the 2025 BC Cook Off. Both Robert and Shawna witnessed the Okanagan’s top culinary talent compete in a high-stakes event at Kelowna’s Lakehouse Kitchens Cooking School. Hosted by the Okanagan Chefs Association, this competition served as a qualifier for the national event in Moncton, NB, this May.

Divided into Young and Senior Chef categories, competitors had 60 minutes to prepare a vegetarian appetizer and a main course featuring duck. “We see these competitions as more than showcases of skill—they are opportunities for mentorship and collaboration, shaping the future of our industry” said Robert.

The judging panel, including Order of Canada recipient Bruno Marti, and JC Fellicela assessed technique, creativity, and execution. After careful deliberation, Sydney Hamelin of Mission Hill Winery won the Senior category, while Tallan Freh of Salt & Brick claimed victory in the Youth category. Runners-up Chris Braun (Erica Jane) and Alistair Campsall (Micro Bar + Bites) showcased the competition’s depth of talent.

Beyond the competition, the camaraderie and learning throughout the day stood out. Chef Bernard Casavant, culinary director at Lakehouse Kitchens and fellow judge, emphasized how every competitor gained invaluable experience, regardless of placement.
Events like these strengthen our culinary community. One of the goals with the Chefs’ Table Society of BC is to foster stronger connections with culinary and hospitality organizations across Canada. The Okanagan Chefs Association exemplifies this spirit, creating a collaborative and supportive environment. The winners also received complimentary tickets to our industry focused conference COOKSCAMP.

Reflecting on this year’s BC Cook Off, Robert is reminded of the immense potential within Canada’s culinary industry. These events not only celebrate excellence but also ensure continued growth, mentorship, and a strong future for our profession.
